Background of the Study
Digital slang has become an integral part of Nigerian online communication, encapsulating cultural identity and innovation in language use. This study investigates the evolution and dissemination of Nigerian digital slang on social media platforms, focusing on Facebook and WhatsApp. Digital slang on Facebook is often characterized by creative abbreviations, emoticons, and playful language adaptations that emerge in public discourse, while WhatsApp facilitates more intimate and rapid exchanges, leading to a distinct slang lexicon (Adeniran, 2023). The research examines how these platforms encourage the development of new linguistic forms that reflect generational, regional, and social dynamics. Nigerian users employ digital slang to signal group membership, express humor, and negotiate social boundaries. As such, digital slang functions as both a cultural marker and a dynamic linguistic innovation that challenges traditional language norms (Okafor, 2024). By comparing the use of slang on these two platforms, the study aims to uncover the socio-cultural drivers behind language innovation and the role of digital media in shaping modern Nigerian communication practices.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of digital slang in Nigerian social media, there is insufficient comparative research on its usage across different platforms. The differences in slang formation and usage between Facebook and WhatsApp are not well understood, limiting the capacity to appreciate the broader linguistic implications. This study seeks to address this gap by systematically comparing digital slang usage on these platforms. Without such analysis, the nuanced ways in which digital environments influence language innovation remain underexplored (Chima, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare the usage of Nigerian digital slang on Facebook and WhatsApp.

  • To identify the socio-cultural factors driving slang innovation on these platforms.

  • To assess the impact of digital slang on contemporary Nigerian language practices.

Research Questions

  • How does Nigerian digital slang differ between Facebook and WhatsApp?

  • What socio-cultural factors influence the formation and usage of digital slang?

  • What impact does digital slang have on modern Nigerian language practices?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative perspective on digital slang in Nigerian social media. The findings provide insights for linguists, educators, and cultural theorists by illuminating the dynamic nature of language innovation in digital contexts, thus enhancing our understanding of modern communication trends (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing Nigerian digital slang on Facebook and WhatsApp. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language use.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Slang: Informal language and expressions that emerge in digital communication.

  • Facebook: A social media platform facilitating public interactions.

  • WhatsApp: An instant messaging application used for private communication.
